Taking care (for granted): Embedding disruptive technologies in healthcare from a multidisciplinary perspective

Disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence promise to solve wicked problems in healthcare. However, there is limited evidence demonstrating that promises and assumptions about new health technologies are realized in practice. This dissertation explores how disruptive technologies become embedded in the healthcare system and their ambivalent impacts. By examining practices, narratives, and infrastructures through the lens of legitimacy, this thesis draws a picture of the embedding process from a multidisciplinary, interparadigmatic perspective.

Revealing the complexities and contradictions involved in embedding disruptive technologies is essential if our goal is to improve healthcare. If our perspective remains bounded by infrastructure we cannot see and assumptions we do not realize we have made, we risk taking care for granted.
