Tensions within the Lower Rhine economy: AKU versus VGF, 1929–1969

Research output: Chapter/Conference proceedingChapterAcademic

Abstract

This chapter addresses the tensions and conflicts within the Dutch-German multinational and looks closely at the historical background of the strife that existed between the management of the Dutch parent company (AKU) and its German subsidiary (VGF). The case shows that, despite the close economic relations in the Rhine economy, different national interests also played a role in the final development of company structures in that cross-border region. It also shows that while economic and geographical structures are a prerequisite for the creation of an economic region, political relations and historical exogenous shocks are equally important for the final outcome.
