Abstract

Restorative proctocolectomy and reconstruction with an ileoanal pouch offers select patients some advantages over permanent ileostomy. Complications can occur intraoperatively or in the early or late phases post-operatively, which may have devastating effects on patient outcomes and quality of life. Early detection of complications and multidisciplinary management in centres with sufficient expertise is vital for pouch salvage.
