Abstract

Technical advances in the field of microbial research have enabled the in depth investigation of the microorganisms (microbiota) within the gastrointestinal tract and their genetic content (microbiome). Besides the application of high-throughput sequencing, targeted analysis of specific bacteria could be conducted to investigate the gastrointestinal microbiota in human health and disease.
