Abstract
This 4-part Webinar Series was hosted by the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University (Hague Campus), in association with the Legal Mobilization Platform, in conversation with other academic and societal partners, and with the participation of Ms. Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.
These webinars aim to elevate current discussions around the application of international law to the longstanding impasse between Israel and the Palestinians, making clear that the violence that erupted since October 2023 both has an important context as well as profound implications for the international legal order. To better understand these issues, we interacted with experts on themes that are relevant to understanding the current situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, as well as its root-causes.
In this fourth Webinar, entitled ‘The International Court of Justice: South Africa v. Israel', we discuss a ground-breaking case in the ICJ, namely a complaint by the Republic of South Africa lodged on 29 December 2023 that was accompanied by a lengthy written submission by a team of international lawyers, regarding alleged violations by Israel of its obligations under the … “Genocide Convention” in relation to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Guests were, in addition to Francesca Albanese, Dr. Christopher Gevers and Dr. Giulia Pinzauti.
