Abstract

The life and work of Theotonio Dos Santos are analyzed, focusing on his contribution to dependency theory, formative years in academia, activism
in the Marxist Political Workers Revolutionary Organization (POLOP), and his initial interactions at the University of Brasília with Vânia Bambirra, Ruy Mauro Marini and André Gunder Frank. After the military coup d'état in Brazil these four researchers regrouped at the Centro of Socioeconomic Studies (CESO), which became the center of Marxist theory dependency in Latin America. There, Dos Santos wrote the founding texts of the dependency theory. In 1973 the overthrow of the socialist government by the military forced him once again into exile. During his exile in Mexico and later back in Brazil, he continued to develop dependency theory and became a major contributor to world system theory. His work culminates with the publication of his trilogy on the contemporary
crisis of capitalism and with his book on development and civilization in homage to Celso Furtado.
