Abstract

Long term survival of intestinal transplants is hampered by chronic rejection (CR). We have developed a rat model of CR after small bowel transplantation (SBT), demonstrating mesenteric infiltration and sclerosis, intimal proliferation of the vessels thickening of the muscularis and mucosal changes. the fibrogenic cytokine basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) could be involved in the tissue remodeling of CR.
Therefore, we investigated the bFGF gene and protein expression and distribution in chronically rejecting intestinal allografts.
