Abstract

In this overview, the association between varicocele, male infertility, live birth rate following natural conception or assisted reproduction in men with a treated or untreated varicocele is discussed. Theories concerning the pathophysiology of varicocele are summarized. Clinical diagnosis and considerations regarding patient selection and treatment indication in males with infertility, symptoms, hypogonadism and children and adolescents with varicocele are critically appraised. Finally, the various treatment modalities, including efficacy in terms of outcome and recurrence and evaluation of effect are discussed.
