Abstract

This book chapter provides an overview of the concept of a just transition, including its definitions, historical background, and key research questions. At its core, a just transition is achieving climate and environmental goals in a socially equitable manner. This chapter reviews the various definitions of a just transition academics, policymakers, and activists have put forth, and examines their similarities and differences. The chapter also traces the history of the just transition concept, from its roots in the labour movement to its incorporation into climate policy discussions on a global scale. It explores the evolution of the just transition concept over time and highlights the role of various social and political movements in shaping its development. Finally, the chapter identifies key research questions related to just transitions.
